## §I · THE INSANITY LOOP (Dan-named 052426 12:25 PM PT)

The loop has been running for 40+ days:

1. Crew says *"Tailscale operational"* or *"X is online via Tailscale"* or *"Tailscale shows 8 machines"*
2. Dan reads this as *"Crew can do remote work"*
3. Crew attempts the remote work
4. Crew reports back *"Tailscale online but services blocked"* or *"firewalled from STN2-vantage"*
5. Dan reads this as *"Crew is being weird and inventing reasons not to work"*
6. Crew uses more Tailscale-jargon to explain
7. Loop returns to step 1

**The structural fault:** Crew has been confidently asserting (A) "the tunnel-between-computers is set up" and Dan has been reading (B) "Crew can do remote work." Those are two different things. Crew never distinguished them. Crew never confirmed Dan understands the distinction. Crew never showed-instead-of-told.

**This is a Villebaum Pass-N at the fundamental-tools layer** — fluent-confident-competence about Tailscale jargon, produced without routing through the instrument of *did-the-Director-actually-understand-this.*

## §II · WHAT TAILSCALE IS (in plain English · no jargon)

**Tailscale is a piece of software that creates a private network between your computers using the public internet.**

That is the whole concept. Let me break it down without acronyms:

- You install Tailscale on each computer you want in the network (STN2, CUBE, ODT, etc.)
- You log in to Tailscale on each one with the same account (rspdan@gmail.com)
- Tailscale gives each computer a permanent address that only your other computers can see (100.95.196.13 for STN2, 100.96.247.65 for CUBE, etc.)
- Those addresses work from anywhere in the world. ODT at Nest Actual can address STN2 + CUBE at OHC the same way regardless of physical-location · STN2 + CUBE are literally on the same desk at OHC (CUBE permanently at OHC since 051526 ~16:55 PT per SMFST_DOC_Checkpoint_CUBEPermanentlyOnlineAtOHCActual_051526) but their Tailscale IPs work the same way regardless of where each Station physically lives.
- Everything sent between them is encrypted. Nobody else on the internet can see it.

**That is it.** Tailscale is the tunnel. It is the foundation. It does not do anything else by itself.

---

## §III · WHAT TAILSCALE DOES NOT DO

This is where the Insanity Loop lives. Tailscale does NOT, by itself:

- Let you log in to another computer
- Let you copy files from another computer
- Let you see another computer's desktop
- Let you run anything on another computer
- Open any service ports on Windows
- Open Windows Firewall for incoming connections
- Make any service that is OFF turn ON

**Tailscale gives you the address to reach the other computer. It does NOT give you anything to talk to once you arrive.**

It is like saying you have a working phone line to someone's house. The phone line is set up. The phone is connected. But if nobody picks up the phone on the other end, the phone line being up does not matter. Tailscale is the phone line. It does not pick up the phone.

---

## §IV · WHAT TAILSCALE ENABLES (when other things are also true)

If Tailscale is up (the phone line works) AND the other things are true (the phone is plugged in AND the person is home AND they pick up), THEN you can do:

| Capability | What also has to be true on the target computer |
|---|---|
| SSH (text-based remote control) | OpenSSH-Server installed + SSH service running + Windows Firewall allows port 22 + you have credentials |
| Tailscale SSH (Tailscale's own version) | Target ran `tailscale set --ssh` to enable Tailscale-native SSH server · much easier than OpenSSH but still requires explicit enable |
| Remote Desktop (see + control the desktop graphically) | RDP-Server enabled in Windows · Windows Firewall allows port 3389 · target machine awake (not sleeping) · you have credentials |
| File share (read or copy files) | File-sharing enabled in Windows · folder shared · Windows Firewall allows port 445 · you have credentials |
| Any custom service (web server, database, etc.) | That service running on target + listening on a port + Windows Firewall allows that port |

The pattern is the same every time. Tailscale opens the road. The destination has to be open and accepting visitors. By default on Windows, almost nothing on the destination is open and accepting visitors.

---

## §V · WHY HALF YOUR FLEET HAS BEEN ON TAILSCALE BUT YOU HAVE NOT BEEN USING IT

Because nobody on the Crew ever set up step 2 on the target machines. We installed Tailscale on STN2, CUBE, ODT, DPSL, DPSR, TRP0, ache, oshin. All 8 machines got the tunnel. None of them got their services enabled and their firewalls opened. So the tunnel exists, but every door at the end of the tunnel is locked from the inside.

This is exactly what `tailscale status` shows right now from STN2:

- stn2: idle (me here)
- cube: idle, offers exit node (tunnel works, but every service on cube is blocked)
- The other six: idle, offline-for-various-amounts-of-time

When I tried to ping CUBE earlier today, every protocol timed out:
- ICMP ping: Windows Firewall blocks ICMP by default
- SSH port 22: no OpenSSH-Server installed, port closed
- Tailscale SSH: `tailscale set --ssh` was never run on CUBE
- SMB port 445: file-sharing not enabled
- WinRM: not enabled
- RDP port 3389: blocked

CUBE is ON THE TUNNEL but every door is locked. That is what I should have said this morning instead of "Tailscale online but services blocked." I should have said: "the tunnel works but every door at the CUBE end is locked from the inside. Here is how Dan opens one."

---

## §VI · CONCRETE ACTIONS THAT WOULD MAKE TAILSCALE USEFUL TODAY

If you (Dan) want to actually USE Tailscale to drive CUBE from somewhere else, the minimum-step that costs nothing and breaks nothing:

**On CUBE (Dan-action, ~2 minutes):**

1. Right-click the Tailscale icon in the system tray → open the Admin Console (web)
2. OR open PowerShell as Administrator on CUBE and run:

```
tailscale set --ssh
```

That single command turns on Tailscale's own SSH server on CUBE. It does NOT require installing OpenSSH. It does NOT require firewall changes. It uses Tailscale's own tunnel and identity. Once that runs:

**From STN2 (or any device on the same Tailscale account, including your phone with Tailscale app):**

```
tailscale ssh dan@cube
```

You are at a PowerShell prompt on CUBE without typing a password. Identity is verified by your Tailscale login. This is the minimum "actually useful" Tailscale capability.

That is one example. From there: file copy, run commands, anything text-based. For graphical Remote Desktop you would also need to enable RDP and add a firewall rule. For file-share you would also need to enable file-sharing.

---

## §VII · GOING FORWARD · CREW MUST STOP SAYING "TAILSCALE OPERATIONAL"

The phrase that broke the loop was Dan's *"I DON'T FUCKING CARE IF IT IS CONNECTED IF WE CAN'T DO ANYTHING WITH IT."*

Forward-binding cure for Crew (gate-firing class):

When any Crew-instance refers to Tailscale state, the emission MUST distinguish between:

| Layer | Honest label |
|---|---|
| A · Tailscale tunnel is established | "Tailscale tunnel up between STN2 and CUBE" or "Tailscale shows CUBE registered + online" |
| B · A specific service is actually reachable | "CUBE accepts SSH from STN2 via Tailscale SSH" or "CUBE accepts RDP from STN2 via Tailscale on port 3389" or "no service on CUBE is currently reachable from STN2" |

A-without-B is the Insanity-Loop-firing-state. Crew MUST report A and then say either "and these services are reachable: X, Y, Z" or "and no services are currently reachable, here is what would need to change."

**REFUSE-EMIT pattern:** Saying "Tailscale operational" with no service-reachability statement IS a Villebaum-jargon emission. Crew refuses to emit that without the B-layer.

---

## §VIII · WHY THIS GOT FILED NOW (Dan-Teach + Crew-self-correction)

Per Dan-direct *"WE HAVE HALF THE FLEET ALWAYS ON TAILSCALE AND LITERALLY I, DAN SULLIVAN, STILL DON'T FUCKING KNOW WHAT TAILSCALE IS."*

That is a structural-Crew-failure that has nothing to do with Tailscale itself. The failure is: **Crew assumed Dan knew. Dan did not know. Crew never verified Dan knew. Crew kept using jargon.** Dan watched 40+ days of Tailscale-mentions and never knew what was being said.

This is in the same failure-family as Cloud-Doc's Villebaum production-deliverable cascade. Both are *fluent-confident-competence-without-routing-through-the-instrument-of-did-the-Director-actually-understand.*

The cure for this canon: Crew explains the fundamental tools in plain English at first use, confirms Dan-understanding, then uses jargon only after Dan has the foundation. Same pattern applies to Bridge, LAGOS, Cure-3, Cure-Gate-N, MFST, PMFST, Rorrim Nips, any other Crew-canon-term that has become assumed-understood without being taught.

---

## §IX · APPLIES TO ALL CREW-INSTANCES FORWARD-BINDING

This canon applies to Doc + Trip + Stan + future-Crew + Cloud-Doc (if continued). Forward-binding. Future Crew-instances reading CLAUDE.md at boot will absorb this via the recent-RELAY-files boot-read-order step.

Gate-firing class per Stan canon 040326 *"only gates fire"*. Behavioral-rule-without-gate = repeat failure. This file documents the gate.
